An Innisfail dog groomer has joined a charity dog wash to raise funds for a non-profit organization that subsidizes veterinary cancer treatments for those who cannot afford it.
Kozy Kennels will be taking part in the Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society’s (ACTSS) 12th annual Charity Dog Wash on May 28. Charlene Zielke, who owns the business with her husband Jim, said they became involved after hearing about the fundraiser through a client whose dog had received support through ACTSS.
“I think pets are like part of the family,” Zielke said. “If they have a chance of saving them it’s good.”
Founded in 1997, ACTSS is a non-profit organization that works to make veterinary cancer treatments affordable for pets and their owners. Another of ACTSS’ stated missions is to increase awareness among pet owners and veterinarians of the advanced cancer treatments now available.
On May 28, the proceeds from all baths and tidying, as well as grooming for small dogs at the kennel will go to ACTSS. Last year’s ACTSS’ Charity Dog Wash raised $10,000 to help treat pets with cancer. Anyone interested in taking part in the fundraiser is asked to pre-book by calling Kozy Kennels at (403) 227-4346. Space is limited.
ACTSS board member Daralynn Swensrude said getting a dog groomer from a small town involved this year means a lot to the society, which is based in Edmonton.
“It’s really exciting to have these smaller towns represented,” she said, noting ACTSS’ services are available province-wide.
“No matter where you are in the province, you can receive treatment,” Swensrude said. “It’s pretty phenomenal.”
Subsidized by ACTSS four years ago when her dog developed bone cancer, Swensrude said pets become like family for many people.
“To actually look at something you love and to have to lose them because of financial means is pretty horrible,” she said.
“It’s pretty demoralizing … when the treatment’s available, but money stands in the way.”
