INNISFAIL – Innisfail's senior men's hockey Birds are flying high on the road this weekend.

And why not?

The Eagles play the Morinville Kings on Nov. 30 at the Morinville Leisure Centre, a team the Birds beat at home on Nov. 10 by a margin of 8-0.

The Eagles are also coming off a big comeback win at home on Nov. 23 that saw the squad claw back from a 4-0 Devon Barons lead after 20 minutes.

And then in the second period the Birds rallied to make it 4-3 but the Barons got another goal late to make it 5-3 after 40 minutes.

The third period was all Innisfail.

Four unanswered goals.

The Birds win 7-5.

And they did it once again by outshooting the other team by a wide margin.

Against Devon they fired 55 shots on goalie Mike Gudmandson.

But the Barons nevertheless found a way to go up 4-0 against Innisfail after 20 minutes. Gudmandson even had an assist on Devon’s second goal.

However, the Eagles offence found a second gear in the second on goals by Chance Longjohn, Nick Bell and Ty Clay.

In the third period, Clay and Bell both got their second goals of the game while Mike Marianchuk and Tyler Berkholtz added singles.

Chance Clark was between the pipes for the Eagles and after a rough first period he was able to stop 21 out of 26 shots fired his way.

The win for the Eagles put the team in fourth place in the nine-team North Central Hockey League.

The Birds now have 10 points after seven games but have a game in hand on the three teams ahead of them in the standings.

Stony Plain and Lacombe are tied for first place with 14 points after eight games.

The Eagles next home game at the Innisfail Twin Arena is on Dec. 7 against the Lacombe Generals. Puck drop is 8 p.m.
