INNISFAIL – The town will soon have new and improved recycling pick-up.

At its April 11 regular meeting council approved a motion to change the town’s recycling pick-up from manual to automated collection.

Steven Kennedy, the town’s director of operational services, said the change would reduce the pickup cost per house per month by $0.60, which would be a savings of about $19,836 per year for collection.

Town council also approved a second motion to purchase blue recycling carts at a cost of $223,112 to replace the small green bins, which many citizens felt were unable to stop items from flying out onto other properties.

Council was told there would be no charge to citizens for the larger and more secure carts.

Delivery of the new carts will be about two months from the placement of the order, said Kennedy.

“I think this improves the recycling habits of our citizens. I’m just glad that things are not going to be blowing around town as often,” said Coun. Jason Heistad.

Kennedy told council that to fund the new carts $163,704 of the total cost will come from the Solid Waste Reserve, with the balance of $59,408 coming from the General Capital Reserve.
