INNISFAIL – The Town of Innisfail was named a Top 10 finalist and is still in the running to win the Big Valley Jamboree Small Town Saturday Night 2017 contest this spring.

The contest was open to municipalities in Alberta with populations under 20,000 people. The winner will have a chance to host a concert featuring Canadian country music sensation Gord Bamford with proceeds going towards a local project or program.

If Innisfail is victorious, proceeds will go towards Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prairies to Peaks for mentorship programs and the Innisfail Kinsmen Club for the new Innisfail skatepark.

"It's terrific news. We're very excited," said Russ Klemmer of the Innisfail Kinsmen Club. "Taking a look at the standings we finished in third position, which is wonderful.

"There was over 100,000 votes cast in total for all 31 participants," he added.

Sherry Dijkstra, executive director for Big Brothers, was just as thrilled with the news.

"I'd like to thank all the people that voted and we need them to vote to get first place," said Dijkstra.

The next round includes a two-minute video for each of the 10 finalists. Videos will be posted online where viewers will vote for a winner. The second round of voting will begin on March 13. The votes will be separate from the first round.

"Now that it's narrowed down to the Top 10, those that were voting for other communities will have the opportunity to take a look at the videos of the Top 10 and select a group or community that they want to support in the second round," said Klemmer.
