INNISFAIL - Local Mounties corralled four Red Deerians after a police cruiser was rammed during the suspects’ desperate getaway attempt from a burglary.
In the early morning hours of Jan. 24, RCMP was dispatched to a report of a break and enter in progress at a local business, said Innisfail RCMP Const. Jeff Erb in a news release issued today (Jan. 25).
He said Mounties located the suspect pickup truck, and witnessed one of the suspects fleeing the business and getting into the waiting vehicle.
Erb said one of the RCMP officers activated emergency lights, and the suspect truck rammed the police cruiser, causing front end damage. He said police were able to immobilize the suspect vehicle, and safely took four suspects into custody. There were no injuries to any of the responding police officers or suspects, said Erb.
Red Deerians Matthew Verhoek, 37, Billy Condon, 34 of Red Deer, Angela Hasnip, and Jordan Ross-Achtemichuk, 26 have been jointly charged with:
• break and enter
• theft under $5,000
• wearing a disguise during the commission of an offence
• possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
In addition, Verhoek also faces charges of assaulting a police officer, flight while pursued by a peace officer, numerous breaches of prior release conditions, and driving while unauthorized.
Condon was also wanted on numerous arrest warrants from Jasper, Red Deer and Wetaskiwin.
All four suspects were held for judicial interim release hearings. Verhoek and Condon were remanded into custody while Hasnip and Ross-Achtemichuk were released. They are due to appear in Red Deer provincial court later this month.
