PENHOLD — A wanted man in possession of a dangerous weapon who was found sleeping inside a running stolen vehicle was busted by investigating Mounties and is now behind bars facing more than a dozen Criminal Code charges.
Innisfail RCMP Cpl. Michael Heysa said shortly after 9 a.m. on Sept. 23 a report from concerned citizens was received about a suspicious vehicle in Penhold’s Hawkridge area.
Heysa said witnesses informed the RCMP a male had been sleeping in a still-running vehicle since the early morning hours.
Innisfail RCMP attended the location and an investigation revealed the vehicle was stolen from Okotoks, he said.
Heysa said local RCMP arrested a lone male subject after gaining entrance into the vehicle. The corporal said a search of the subject resulted in police locating a loaded 9mm Glock 17 handgun, additional rounds of 9mm ammo, as well as illegal drugs that included methamphetamine and fentanyl that were allegedly in the supsect's possession.
In addition, a number of break-in tools were located in the vehicle, said Heysa.
Trevor Norman Legge, a 39-year-old Central Alberta man, has been charged with:
- Possession of property obtained by crime;
- Possession of a restricted firearm;
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized;
- Carrying a concealed weapon;
- Possession of a weapon contrary to an order to surrender;
- Two counts of possession of a controlled substance;
- Possession of break-in tools;
- Resisting arrest;
- Three counts of failing to comply with release order conditions.
Heysa said Legge was also charged with a “number” of provincial Traffic Safety Act offences.
At the time of his arrest, Legge was wanted on an outstanding warrant out of Drumheller and on a Canada-wide apprehension order, said Heysa. Following a bail hearing, Legge was remanded to appear today (Sept. 24) in Red Deer provincial court.
