INNISFAIL – The Innisfail Seniors Drop-In Centre has a new name.

“It’s now called the Lundgren Centre,” said member Jean Bennett. “Mabel and Oscar Lundgren were the couple that began the senior drop-in (society) 44 years ago.”

With the society being an important part of the Innisfail community for more than four decades, Bennett said they wanted to honour its founders and their contributions.

“They started it out in a small building down on Main Street,” she said. “When the town was building offices (over there) they built a centre for them to use at that same building.”

The building is in the same location today and is now known as the Lundgren Centre.

Several members of the Lundgren family, both those who live in the area and those outside of the province, are expected to attend a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony later this summer.

“We’re hoping (to hold an official opening) sometime this summer when some of the family will be available to come here,” said Bennett, noting the success of the 40th anniversary of the seniors drop-in society in 2014.

“(The centre's) been very well used over the years. They had a big following of people that came to it, even from the very beginning. It’s been great.”

Seniors in Innisfail have embraced the new name for their drop-in centre, she said.

“I think it’s fine with most of them. A lot of our members are new to town and didn’t know the Lundgrens but they understand that’s our reasoning for naming it because they were the people that founded the association in the first place,” Bennett concluded.

The Innisfail Senior Drop-In Society welcomes all community members 50 and over.

Last week in the Seniors Week supplement, the Innisfail Province misspelled the new name for the Innisfail Seniors Drop-In Centre. The correct name is the Lundgren Centre. The Innisfail Province apologizes for the error and any inconvenience this may have caused.
