INNISFAIL – The Town of Innisfail will officially get its annual provincial funding to support municipal policing.
Town council recently agreed to have the town’s chief elected official sign off on a one-year agreement for a provincial Policing Support Grant (PSG) that covers the 2024-25 fiscal year.
On Dec. 9 at town council’s regular meeting, Erica Vickers, the town’s director of corporate services, said once the agreement was signed it would be sent immediately back to the province.
Vickers told council the agreement start date was effective April 1, 2024 and expires March 31, 2025.
Vickers told council the grant will be released once signed contracts are received.
The PSG was created by the province in 2022 through the amalgamation of the Municipal Policing Assistance Grant and the Police Officer Grant.
Council was told the intent was to simplify the administrative and financial processes attached to policing grants for both the ministry and the Town of Innisfail.
She said the approved purpose of PSG funds is to both offset police officer costs as well as to ensure delivery of policing, implementation of policing initiatives and priorities, policing oversight and the ability to support local enhanced policing services.
Vickers said the Town of Innisfail is eligible for a grant in the amount of $362,776.
“This amount has not changed since last year and is the amount that was accounted for in our 2024 annual budget,” said Vickers.
Council unanimously approved a motion to have council authorize the chief elected official to sign the PSG funding agreement.
