INNISFAIL - Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA and Alberta cabinet minister Devin Dreeshen attended Monday’s inauguration of U.S. president Donald Trump, say officials.

The provincial minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Dreeshen attended the Jan. 20 swearing-in of Trump in Washington, D.C. as a private citizen.

“Minister Dreeshen attended as private citizen and not in any official capacity as a government representative,” his press secretary Husam Khalo told the Albertan Tuesday.

Dreeshen paid for all his own flights and accommodations, he said.

“He’s obviously attending to support and re-connect with old friends,” he said.

Asked who the ‘old friends’ were, Khalo could not say.

Dreeshen was not planning to do any government business during his trip to Washington, he said.

Asked when Dreeshen will be back in the riding, Khalo said, “relatively soon."
