INNISFAIL – Town of Innisfail councillor Don Harrison has passed away following a lengthy illness.
The official announcement on Harrison’s passing on Nov. 1 was made Monday, Nov. 4 by the Town of Innisfail.
“Don was a true champion for Innisfail, always putting the whole community first and foremost in his decision making and advocacy,” said Town of Innisfail Mayor Jean Barclay in a prepared statement released by the town.
“Don brought a lifetime of experience to council.”
Harrison, 70, was a retired assistant provincial government deputy minister, and a past mayor of Onoway, a town of about 1,000 citizens 64 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
“His unbounding enthusiasm to serve on committees, boards, and volunteer organizations, all contributed to his legacy as a community builder,” said Barclay. “Most important to Don was his wife and best friend Colleen, his family and friends, nature and conservation, and serving his community. He loved Innisfail and always championed to make our community better.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Colleen and their family. Don will be truly missed by all of us, but he will not be forgotten,” added the mayor. “He faced these past few months with courage and grace.
“Thank you Don for your kindness, your professionalism, your mentorship, and your infectious positive attitude.
“Don was simply the best”.
Harrison, a former manager of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #104 in Innisfail, was first elected to Innisfail town council in a byelection on June 8, 2020, and retained his seat in the 2021 municipal general election.
He was on a leave of absence from council when he died.
