INNISFAIL – Excitement is building for the 2019 Canada Winter Games across the country and right here in Innisfail.

The Canada Winter Games torch relay began its cross-country trek last fall from the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, in preparation for the 2019 Canada Winter Games Feb. 15 to March 3 in Red Deer.

The MNP Canada Games Torch Relay is visiting 48 communities across Canada, including 26 torch relay stops and 22 celebration stops.

Innisfail was announced as one of the celebration stops.

The event takes place at the Innisfail Library/Learning Centre on Jan. 30 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

“It’s one of the last stops before it goes right into Red Deer so you know it’s going to be a big deal,” said Kane Williams, recreation program coordinator with the Town of Innisfail. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.

“People are going to know (the Canada Winter Games) are here when you see events like this going on,” he added.

Williams noted the celebration event will have the Canada Games relay torch on hand, but won’t include a torch relay. It will also be a great way for families to learn more about what’s happening during the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

“We get to welcome the whole country to Central Alberta,” said Williams, noting the town’s small role in assisting with preparations for the event. “We helped make sure the space was there for them and it’s available.”

Waskasoo, the 2019 Canada Winter Games mascot is expected to be on hand for the celebration stop, which may also include games, activities and giveaways, noted Williams.

“It’s just a chance for a lot of people to come out and welcome the Canada Games as it’s making its way to Red Deer.

“It’s going to be very inspiring for people in Central Alberta,” Williams concluded.
