INNISFAIL - A local man was nabbed twice within a span of four days for allegedly being in possession of methamphetamine while being in a motor vehicle.

“It is concerning, of course,” said Innisfail RCMP Sgt. Lori Eiler. "Driving under the influence of anything is concerning and the effects of alcohol as we have seen in the past is devastating when mixed with driving. Logically, ingesting drugs such as methamphetamine and then driving a vehicle would be equally as concerning."

Eiler said on April 29 that busts involving crystal meth is an issue Innisfail RCMP has become increasingly familiar with this year. She said the detachment is currently working on “quite a large number of files” involving the use or misuse of crystal meth.

“Definitely in reviewing the files, like I do every day, I am noticing what appears to be an increased volume of files involving crystal meth,” said Eiler.

The first of the latest two reported incidents occurred at about 10 p.m. on April 23 when Innisfail RCMP conducted a traffic stop on the Highway 2 overpass leaving the town.

Eiler said an occupant of the vehicle was wanted on outstanding warrants and was arrested without incident.

She said police conducted a search and located what is believed to be cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine.

Derek Duckworth, 27, of Innisfail, has been charged with obstruction and possession of controlled substance. Eiler said he is “known” to police.

Duckworth was released by a justice of the peace to appear in Red Deer provincial court on July 3.

Four days later on April 27 at about 2:50 p.m., Innisfail RCMP, while on regular patrols, observed a grey car travelling north on 49th Avenue.

Eiler said the vehicle was stopped and an investigation began. She said the vehicle was searched and police discovered drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.

Eiler said one passenger and the driver were arrested without incident.

Duckworth was again charged with being in possession of a controlled substance.

Amy Marie Roy, 31, of Red Deer, was also charged with being in possession of a controlled substance.

Both accused were released to appear in Red Deer provincial court on July 30.
