INNISFAIL – Science can be fun.

That’s what participants will learn when they join the new science club at the Innisfail Library/Learning Centre.

“It’s called the Why??? Science Club. I think of myself as a science enthusiast and I want to share that with kids,” said Tara Downs, youth and adult programmer.

“I think kids tend to think of (science) as a subject in school rather than about how we describe the world around us,” she added. “I want them to have some fun with it and realize that science is fun.”

Participating in the science club is free with an Innisfail Public Library card, said Downs, adding the club is open to children eight years of age and older. All participants must pre-register for each session.

The club is held the first and third Saturday of every month for 90-minute sessions from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and will be limited to a maximum of 10 participants, she noted.

Downs said the club will include activities and cover different topics of science that participants will learn about, and different areas of science including chemistry, physics and biology.

“We are creating a mad scientist name and then we’re going to be discussing matter today (including) atoms and molecules," she said, noting activities focused on visible and invisible matter. "Then we’re doing a few experiments with combustion.

“I’m trying to choose fun experiments to do and trying to weave a thread between them, connecting science themes,” she added, noting the club is expected to run until the end of June.

Felix Fitzgerald is one of the participants in the new club.

“I’m excited to learn about science,” said Fitzgerald. “I want to do science projects.”

For more information on the science club or to pre-register for an upcoming session, contact Tara Downs at 403-227-4407.
