Five Korean War veterans from the Innisfail Korean Veteran's Association recently received their ambassador for peace medal in Calgary.
On April 25, the Innisfail KVA was one of three units to attend the medal presentation at the Centennial Calgary Branch.
“Normally, in order to receive them you would have to go back to Korea,” explained Korean War veteran Doug Whorrall. He said a number of veterans haven't gone back — some are too sick or unwilling to travel.
“So the Korean government, to celebrate the 60-year anniversary of the war, are trying to ensure all Koreans vets who served in the war receive it.”
Korean Ambassador Joo Hong Nam and Col. Soo Wan Lee from Defence Attaché, with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea presented the medals to Gil Allen, Derek Belbin, Abran Brown, Bill Robson and Fred Peitzsche of Innisfail. They were five of 24 veterans to receive the medal in Calgary. Twenty-three medals were also handed out to other veterans in Edmonton.
