Legion Valentine's gala offers dinner, dancing

If dinner and dancing sound like a good plan for the Valentine's Day season, why not check out the 12th annual Valentine's Gala put on by the legion's ladies auxiliary group on Feb.

If dinner and dancing sound like a good plan for the Valentine's Day season, why not check out the 12th annual Valentine's Gala put on by the legion's ladies auxiliary group on Feb. 11?

The Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch #104 is offering a prime rib dinner, a live band and singer and a silent auction for the popular event. Verina Pearson, the president of the auxiliary branch, said the funds raised will go to the Military Family Resource Centre.

The dinner is "a dress-up affair," Pearson said.

Tickets are $25 if bought before Feb. 5; after that tickets are $30. They can be purchased at the legion.

The ladies auxiliary is catering the event with a prime rib dinner, ham, baby potatoes and "probably strawberry shortcake for dessert," Pearson said.

Tickets are "moving pretty good," Pearson said.

"We're usually 180 to 200," she said of the usual number of attendees.

The event is open to everyone in the community who'd like to attend.

In addition to the silent auction there will be other prizes up for grabs during the evening. Some items for the silent auction include a deacon's bench and a high-end coffee maker.

"We have all sorts of items," Pearson said.

Donations are still being accepted from businesses and individuals for the silent auction. Pearson said to call the legion.

The live band and singer will offer the opportunity for some dancing.

"We're having Stillwaters with Verna Charlton," Pearson said.

The ladies auxiliary is still doing catering though Pearson said the members are getting older. The organization's future in coming years depends on more people getting involved.

"We would like people to join up," Pearson said, noting that even working just one or two events would help.

The Valentine's Gala is Feb. 11 at the legion auditorium. Cocktails start at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
