Hundreds of pipers, drummers, dancers, athletic competitors and visitors will fill the field at the 69th Annual Red Deer Highland Games.

Several Innisfail and area Highland dancers are also expected to participate and compete in the games.

The event takes place at the Red Deer Titans Rugby Park, just north of Penhold, off Rge. Rd. 275A on June 25.

Gates open for competitors and members of the public at 8 a.m.

The Red Deer Highland Games will include a variety of activities throughout the day, including Highland dancing, tug-of-war, and piping and drumming events.

“For this event there will be individuals (pipers and drummers) competing,” said Michael McLetchie of the Innisfail Legion Pipe Band. “There will be a couple of people from Innisfail competing in the Red Deer Highland Games.”

In addition, there will be athletic events such as tossing the caber, putting the stone event and throwing the hammers. There will also be a shortbread competition where contestants will bake a single batch of traditional (Scottish) shortbread. All entries in the shortbread competition will be auctioned off following the judging and awarding of prizes.

Proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Red Deer Food Bank.
