INNISFAIL – An Innisfail man charged with manslaughter in connection to a local street death last month has been released on bail.

Malcolm “Nathan” Bourgeois, 41, was scheduled to make his second court appearance on May 15 but it was adjourned. Later that day Bourgeois was released on bail under his own recognizance.

Bail was set at $5,000, according to a clerk at Red Deer provincial court.

Bourgeois was charged with manslaughter on April 25 following an altercation in downtown Innisfail. Innisfail RCMP had responded to an injured male the night before on the sidewalk in the area of 51st Avenue and 49th Street.

The injured male, 26-year-old Winston “Drew” Grant, was transported to hospital by EMS where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Bourgeois was remanded into custody and made his first court appearance on May 1.

According to court records, conditions for Bourgeois include keeping the peace and being on good behaviour, appearing in court when required to do so. Court orders also state the accused be supervised by a bail supervisor in Calgary and report when required. He is also to reside where directed by the bail supervisor and provide his address.

His conditions also state he shall not possess anything that is designed for use as a weapon, that he not have or possess any firearms, nor possess any manner of illegal drugs.

Bourgeois' next court appearance is scheduled for June 19.
