INNISFAIL – Town council has approved a construction contract that will see five different areas in Innisfail with improved infrastructure.

The estimated total project cost, which includes engineering and testing, construction and a 10 per cent contingency, is $1,081,671.57.

The project will be funded from the town’s Wastewater Reserve and MSI fund.

“It’s nice to see that this is coming well under budget,” said Mayor Jean Barclay at council’s regular meeting on April 24.

Town council was told the original estimate for the five-part infrastructure project was $1,306,000.

At the same April 24 meeting council unanimously approved a $900,032.34 construction contract to Red Deer’s Border Paving Ltd.

Steven Kennedy, the town’s director of operations, told council the contract to Border Paving Ltd. includes the following work in five areas of town:

• 40th Street from 5st1 Avenue to 49th Avenue requires surface replacement with some minor curb and sidewalk replacements. This roadway was identified by the town as a high priority in the 2022 road assessment.

• 42nd Street from Highway 54 to 60th Avenue requires a new sidewalk and multi-use trail to connect the Bella Vista subdivision. The town said this work will allow an application to Alberta Transportation for a speed reduction and pedestrian crossing at the Highway 54 and 42nd Street intersection.

• Replacement of paved lanes in the West Park and Napoleon Lake areas.

• Trail replacement at the Napoleon Park Sports Fields and Strammit Park.

• 40th  Street Close from 40th Street to the end requires a new sanitary main as it has several sags and requires regular flushing. The roadway was identified as a high priority in the 2022 road assessment.

Kennedy said in his report to council that administration will work with project consultant Tagish Engineering on providing advanced communication to impacted property owners and tenants.
