A mobile greenhouse designed to introduce students to plants made recent stops at École John Wilson Elementary School and École St. Marguerite Bourgeouys School.
MJ Hawkins of the Greenstart Project said the travelling greenhouse program is a good resource for educators and the students.
“They all learn a bit about how plants grow,” Hawkins said of the students' experiences in the greenhouse.
The greenhouse did a few sessions with students from John Wilson. Hawkins said the Grade 4s were studying plant growth. Several classes of students at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys were treated to a one-day stop where they got the chance to plant tomato plants they could take home.
“Our focus is to let them know how important plants are,” Hawkins said, adding they teach the kids about what grows in the area, the importance of agriculture and other plant-related information.
Fortis Alberta sponsors the mobile greenhouse laboratory in being able to go around the region.
“We want to make it free for all the families,” Hawkins said.
The Greenstart Project is based out of Calgary and has several of the mobile units going out.
“We've had thousands of students over the years,” Hawkins said. The program started in 2004.
One of the advantages of the travelling greenhouse is it's an enclosed shelter.
“We can come in any weather,” Hawkins said.
