PENHOLD – RCMP continue to probe a single-vehicle accident in town that resulted in serious injuries to the driver.

At about 10:20 p.m. on Jan. 5, emergency rescue personnel from the Penhold Fire Department were dispatched to an accident on Highway 2A at the intersection of Hawkridge Boulevard.

"A vehicle hit a wooden post and a street light head on," said Capt. Elisabeth Crowson of the local fire department.

Penhold firefighters at the scene extricated the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, who was transported by EMS to Innisfail Health Centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Penhold fire Chief Jim Pendergast said emergency crews shut down Highway 2A in both directions, as well as westbound traffic on Hawkridge Boulevard, and continued traffic management until after midnight.

He said FortisAlberta crews were called to the scene to check the condition of the light pole.

Pendergast said a total of five units and 19 personnel from the local fire department responded to the crash. He said RCMP are investigating the accident.
