The fitness centre at the Penhold Regional Multiplex is starting to thrive under the town's management.
In May the fitness centre took in over $9,000 of revenue, council learned in a report from the multiplex facilities manager on June 11.
Derek Crichton's report said 1,140 people made their way through the doors that month. He said in an interview the $9,000 is a combination of different revenue streams.
“That's a summation of both our membership sales, as well as our supplement sales, as well as our training sales,” Crichton said.
Though the $9,000 looks impressive, Crichton said it's not a peak for this year.
“January's always big,” he said. He expects sales and attendance to pick up again after the summer is over. He said the $9,000 is not net revenue but instead is a gross total.
Crichton said the town took over managing the fitness centre last year and “people started coming.”
“It's doing a helluva lot better than it was,” Crichton said. Membership numbers from last year have increased from under 100 to about 220-230 members now.
“My goal is to have 500 members,” Crichton said.
Crichton said the fitness centre is “doing OK.”
“It's doing much better than it was,” Crichton said. He said the centre seems to be on its way to paying for itself.
Part of the improvements made by the town was bringing in an experienced full-time employee.
“We've hired a supervisor who's done a great job,” he said. The gym offers personal training and supplements in addition to its other facilities.
