Muscle, mopar, antique and modern vehicles dazzled the crowds during the annual “Weekend of Wheels” in Innisfail.
The two-day event on Sept. 10 and 11 was presented by the Innisfail Kinsmen Club and was a great success.
"(Saturday) couldn't have been any better," said Russ Klemmer, a director with the Innisfail Kinsmen Club and one of the organizers of the event. "For the Kinsmen's (first show after) taking over from the downtown association, it was amazing. The weather started out a little chilly but the sun came out and the cars came out."
A total of 110 cars entered the Show n' Shine on Saturday.
“We're very happy with the turnout," he added, noting both food and automobile memorabilia vendors were also a part of the event.
“The Kinsmen did a great job. The town thanks them for taking this endeavour on and continuing with the beautiful car show,” said Innisfail mayor Brian Spiller. “A lot of people came out (Saturday) and enjoyed what they saw.”
Several trophies were handed out including a people's choice award.
"Nine of the trophies were from our platinum sponsors, and we had our people's choice award where spectators could pay a dollar and vote for their favourite car," said Klemmer. "This year it was won by a 1991 mustang.”
He noted the great response from the community on both Saturday and Sunday.
"It was great to see the community and all the spectators that came out to enjoy this,” he said, adding the 100-foot shootout returned Sunday after a two-year hiatus.
A total of 15 cars participated in the shootout with about 150 fans in the stands on Sunday.
"We wrapped up around 3:30 p.m. Had we had a few more participants we probably would have run later, but with the number of cars we had we were able to wrap up prior to the rain,” he added.
The event was a fundraiser for the new proposed Innisfail Skatepark said Klemmer, noting not all funds raised were tallied by press time, but the club expected to raise a little bit of money for the project.
“The group that ran the shootout – the Rocky 100 Footers Club, they did a fantastic job throughout the day,” said Klemmer. “At the end of the day they came to us and said they wanted to reduce their fee by $500 so that money could go directly towards the skateboard park.”
With this year's success the Kinsmen Club will be on board for the Weekend of Wheels next year.
"Without a doubt. We look forward to the event in 2017,” said Klemmer.
