INNISFAIL – Start your engines.

It’s time for Innisfail’s Weekend of Wheels.

The annual two-day event takes place Sept. 8 and 9 and will once again feature the Show 'n’ Shine at John’s NoFrills on Saturday and the 100-foot shootout in front of the Innisfail Arena on Sunday.

It’s the third year the Innisfail Kinsmen and Kinettes have hosted the Weekend of Wheels.

“It’s going in the right direction. We’re getting more and more participants,” said Russ Klemmer, president of the Innisfail Kinsmen Club. “We’ll be bringing back the 100-foot shootout for the third year at the Arena and the Show ’n' Shine begins at 9 a.m. and runs until about 2:30 p.m.”

Last year saw about 140 cars participate in the Show 'n’ Shine.

There’s a $10 fee to register a car in the Show 'n’ Shine and $25 to register a vehicle for the 100-foot shootout, noted Klemmer. It’s $5 for spectators to watch the shootout while kids 12 and under are free.

Money raised from the weekend will go towards the new skatepark, an important community project.

“One hundred per cent of the proceeds are going towards the skatepark,” said Klemmer, noting the club has raised a total of $50,000 for the project over the past two years, through fundraising events and donations from individuals and groups.

In addition to cars, the Show 'n’ Shine will also feature a variety of food vendors and a couple of new attractions this year.

CCMR Mobile Dyno is one of them.

"People at the car show (Saturday) have the ability to have their car put onto this mobile dyno that tests the horsepower and torque of their vehicles,” he said, adding it’s $120 per car or $200 per diesel to have it done.

“We’re really excited about having that out.

“Not only is it interesting for the people that (test) their cars, but for spectators as well,” he added.

Klemmer also noted a car care clinic for women on Saturday.

"We were looking for ways to build on the event and this one was seen as an opportunity to appeal to the women in Innisfail,” said Klemmer. “This is an opportunity for women to learn about car maintenance and hear from an experienced and successful woman in the industry.”
