INNISFAIL – Alberta RCMP have rolled out a new easy-to-use mobile app designed to make it a lot easier for citizens to access crime information and report non-emergency incidents.
The Mounties officially announced the new app for smartphones on last month, and Innisfail RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuk fully backs the new initiative.
“We’re just looking for new ways to reach the public in ways they are more comfortable with. For some people it’s a lot easier and more convenient way of messaging and communicating,” said Matechuk. “Technology is increasing and forever changing rapidly, and we have to change with it. I think it is a step forward. We support the new initiative.”
The free brand-new mobile app can be downloaded at no cost. In a news release, Alberta RCMP said the app has been developed to simplify online user experience on mobile devices to ensure Albertans can access information quickly and conveniently.
By using the new app, citizens will easily find an online crime reporting tab. There are also ones for Crime Stoppers, a full list of RCMP detachments in their region, contact information, crime statistics, and for Project Lock Up, an initiative enabling the RCMP and its enforcement and citizen-led stakeholders to place a spotlight on repeat victims of property crime.
The app also provides access to partner law enforcement services, mental health supports, and links to Alberta RCMP social media accounts.
"An app is an easy way for the public to stay connected and report crime to the police along with gaining quick and easy access to Alberta RCMP news and information," said Supt. Peter Tewfik, officer in charge of Alberta RCMP's Community Safety and Wellbeing Branch. "Having an app will provide the public with an option for digital accessibility that is convenient and centralized."
Alberta RCMP said that while the new app provides convenient links to the force’s social media account, it will not replace existing website, social media feeds, other sources for information. As well, the new tool will not replace other methods of crime reporting, engagement, or emergency assistance.
However, the new app is not meant for reporting emergencies, and Alberta RCMP are urging the public to call 911 to report crimes in progress.
For reporting non-emergency property crimes, citizens can go to the Alberta RCMP app, or contact their nearest RCMP detachment.
If citizens have information about a crime and wish to remain anonymous, they can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
For scams and fraud, citizens can contact their local detachment and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca
