INNISFAIL – There is a new second in command at the high school.

Scott MacDonald, 45, is the new vice-principal at Innisfail High School and brings more than two decades of experience as both an administrator and teacher.

MacDonald replaced both former vice-principals, Narsh Ramrattan and Jeff Anderson.

“Coming to Innisfail, it's been great. I've been welcomed and I've felt accepted here,” said MacDonald, noting the generous nature of both staff and students. “One of the things I've really done is make an effort to try to make those connections with the staff, with the students and with the parents.”

He settled into his new role at the end of August and was on board when the new school year began.

Originally from Prince Edward Island, MacDonald moved to Fort McMurray 19 years ago where he taught for several years, before moving south to Cremona, where he spent 10 years as a teacher and the last four years as a vice-principal at a kindergarten to Grade12 school.

“I've always described myself as an academic administrator. My focus throughout the years as a teacher and as an administrator has been on diploma exams, on PATs (provincial achievement tests) and on bringing students up to the highest level they possibly can be,” he said. “To do that you need to build good relationships. In the first few months here it's really been about building the relationships with the staff, with the students and with the parents.”

In his role as vice-principal, MacDonald said he wants to help encourage learning and improve students' success in and outside the classroom.

“I want to use my experience and skill set to maximize the potential of the staff and of the students to do the best they possibly can,” MacDonald concluded.
