Discovery Wildlife Park will be allowed to build a large bathroom facility for its planned new campground.

At town council's April 25 regular meeting, a proposal was brought forward by the zoo to construct a 653-square-foot bathroom facility for its new nine-acre, 66-unit campground, planned for the northeast corner of the 90-acre property. The application to build a new campground at the zoo was approved by council last January.

Council was told the owners of the property had to make a new application for the washroom facility to comply with building safety codes and that the placement of the 24-foot by 32-foot building is “beyond” the original permit.

In a report to council, administration stated the new facility will feature separate male and female facilities, a fully accessible (barrier-free) private washroom and basic laundry facilities, including a large sink and laundry tray.

Council was told the building will be constructed on metal skids and placed on a gravel pad. The plumbing system will consist of a septic system with a buried septic tank.

The administration report said the proposed development would not affect or interfere with Waskasoo Creek or with the retention of existing mature vegetation along the creek.

Construction of the new campground is scheduled to begin this year with the facility opening in 2017 for the public.

Council unanimously approved the application. Coun. Doug Bos, a co-owner of the park, recused himself from the discussion and vote.
