INNISFAIL - A night of dancing for dads and daughters is aiming to help raise money for an organization that assists victims of human trafficking in Central Alberta.

Tickets for the Daddy Daughter Dance, set to be held Jan. 13 at the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion auditorium, are going on sale on Oct. 11 at the Innisfail Co-op from 6 to 9 p.m. The theme of the dance is A Night Under the Stars.

Tickets for the event will cost $60 each. Proceeds from the event will benefit Magdalene House Society, a Red Deer-based group that aims to help those exploited by human trafficking.

Innisfail resident Kristen Spatz is lending her fundraising and organizational knowhow to the endeavour.

Spatz said she's learned about human trafficking and was shocked to discover it does occur in the Central Alberta area. She'd learned about the topic in school.

“I had no idea that human trafficking or sex trafficking was happening near us at all,” she said. “So I did a little bit of research and it is around us.”

So she decided to help out with an event to help raise funds for the society. Spatz said many people, like herself, are not aware of it happening so close to home.

“I want the word to get out, I've brought it up to a lot of people,” she said, adding she encourages people to research human trafficking.

The event will, of course, include dancing to a DJ, dinner, door prizes and a silent auction. There will also be a photographer on hand to take daddy and daughter portraits for $5 each.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. There will be a guest speaker who will do a presentation on Magdalene House Society and human trafficking.

Donations are still being accepted for door prizes and silent auction items. Spatz said there have already been several donations after only a couple of weeks of fundraising.

For those who can't make it to the sale kickoff at the Co-op on Oct. 11, tickets can be purchased by contact Spatz at [email protected]
