INNISFAIL – Nutrition is an important component for a healthy, growing baby.
Parents of infants are invited to attend a free infant nutrition class offered by Alberta Health Services (AHS) at the Innisfail Parent Link Centre on Oct. 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
“We’ve been doing the infant nutrition program with Alberta Heath Services for about three years,” said Tracy Davis-McMillan, coordinator for the Innisfail Parent Link Centre. “Typically, we have (the infant nutrition workshop) every few months, maybe four times a year.”
The two-hour workshop is lead by a registered dietician and highlights several important areas, including why babies need to start on iron-rich foods at six months of age, how to start introducing solid foods, and why progressing to different food textures is important.
“It’s a really good opportunity for new parents to come in, learn about infant nutrition and familiarize themselves with the Parent Link Centre,” said Davis-McMillian.
The workshop will focus on creating a positive feeding relationship between parent and infant and will show parents how to make their own baby food and how to prepare vegetables, fruit, meat and meat alternatives using a number of different kitchen tools, including hand mixers, food mills and food processors.
“It’s a really good collaboration between AHS and Parent Link because we both provide services to help support families,” said Davis-McMillan.
