The Town of Penhold received notification on Dec. 3 from Alberta Municipal Affairs that three funding requests totalling $668,000 have been given the green light.

Funding was approved under the capital funding component of the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) for a tandem truck priced at $130,000, a training room at the multiplex for $138,000, and construction at the Waskasoo intersection for $400,000.

The MSI funds will be used to equip a training room in the new section of the Penhold Multiplex/Penhold Crossing Secondary School facility.

ìWe applied for $138,000 funding based on the availability of space in the attached building,î said Linda Hollman, the town's chief financial officer. ìThe exact usage of the training room is still to be determined but this seems to be the best use of our resources.î

Funding for the Waskasoo intersection at Highway 42 was also considered good news for the community. ìThe $400,000 amount is the most affordable of two options for the Town of Penhold,î said Hollman. ìHowever, we are still in discussions with Alberta Highways to determine which design will be recommended.î

The two options for the intersection range in price from $400,000 for what is classed as a type two, to $1.2 million for the more complex type five. Melcor's decision to begin its new subdivision, along with the Penhold Crossing Secondary School construction project, are factors in the intersection style required.

ìAt this point we do not know which will be chosen, but will deal with that once a recommendation is made,î said Hollman.

Nancy McAteer, the town's public works manager, had included the $130,000 tandem truck in her capital budget as part of a regular maintenance plan to keep the fleet of vehicles current.
