A municipal census is being considered in Penhold if enough census takers can be found to complete the project, according to the mayor.
“At this present time the town and administration are looking at doing a census,” said Mayor Dennis Cooper.
Penhold is currently looking for workers who'd be willing to complete the census. Cooper said he thinks about six people are needed for the project, which would need to be done by June 30.
Though the federal census was completed in 2011 and the numbers released in February this year, Cooper said it's important to update the numbers because grants are often based on population.
It's also often important to help attract new business to the town.
“It makes a big difference for people to decide to start a business in town,” Cooper said.
Cooper has said in a previous interview with the Province that often 2,500 is a “magical number” to attract franchises to the area.
According to the 2011 federal census numbers, Penhold's population is 2,375, a 20.9 per cent increase over the population in 2006.
Currently Penhold is on track to match and exceed its development permit numbers for 2011, with many of the new developments being new homes.
