Skate sharpening purchase
Penhold council voted to enter into negotiations to purchase the skate sharpening equipment at the Penhold Regional Multiplex during their March 12 meeting.
The resolution passed by councillors set a maximum of $5,900 for the purchase, which would include the skate sharpening equipment, shelving and compensation for the venting installed by the current operator.
Rick Binnendyk, the chief administrative officer for the town, said administration was suggesting the buy out because the private owner has not been able to provide as much service as had originally been hoped.
"His schedule started shifting on him," Binnendyk said. He said it would take about a year and a half of operation to recover the costs of purchasing the equipment.
"At this point in time the staff is doing most of the work," Binnendyk said, referring to the staff employed by the town at the multiplex.
The town had been receiving half of the revenue from the operation. They got $1,050 for six months of 2011.
The motion to enter into negotiations to purchase the equipment with a maximum price of $5,900 was passed unanimously.
Software upgrades
Town council passed a motion to spend $6,315 on an upgrade for the town's Microsoft Exchange system.
"It's going to upgrade the server to handle emails more proficiently," said Binnendyk. He said the upgrades will include "a number of enhancements."
Council voted unanimously to approve the budget for the project.
Multiplex board appointed
Council completed three readings for the Multiplex board bylaw and appointed its first members during the meeting.
Councillors briefly discussed the role of the board before passing all three readings necessary to pass the bylaw.
"It gives the manager some(where) to test his ideas with the community before it comes to (council)," Mayor Dennis Cooper said.
Cooper, Coun. Kathy Sitter, Ralph Frank, Mike Yargeau and Rob MacKinnon were all appointed as members of the board in a vote after the bylaw passed. There are still spots open for interested applicants.
