PENHOLD – Policing in town and concerns about recent property crimes were the topics of a discussion at Monday's (Sept. 11) council meeting.

Mayor Dennis Cooper said he floated the idea of hiring another peace officer -- the town already employs two -- and beginning night patrols, but no one on council brought the motion forward at the time.

“I would like to see more evening patrols,” Cooper said in an interview.

He also updated his colleagues during his report about recent crimes like break-ins, and said residents are frustrated.

There was a motion passed by council directing town administration to look at lighting in parks, Cooper asid.

There is also a request to meet with the RCMP, as well as talk about developing a citizens on patrol program in Penhold.

Pedestrian crossing coming

Council was informed the town has received permission to install a pedestrian crosswalk across Highway 42 near the Penhold Regional Multiplex.

The crosswalk installation will include signals and painted lines, and will be paid for by the town.

Cooper said the speed limit will be lowered on the highway in this area as well, down to 60 km/h from the bridge to the intersection of Waskasoo Avenue.
