PENHOLD – The town's fire department will soon have a new roof.

Penhold council recently awarded a contract to Black Diamond Contracting to install a new metal roof at the Penhold Fire Department, located at 1001 Minto Street.

The total cost of the roof is $15,261.75.

Penhold mayor Mike Yargeau said the new roof is needed because the current roof was found to be leaking earlier this year.

“There's been no major damage yet but we noticed the problem,” said Yargeau. “We didn't budget to replace the roof in our 2017 budget, but due to the nature (of the problem) and being in the fire hall we don't want any of our equipment damaged. We decided we wanted to move ahead with this as soon as possible,” he added. “We approved it (at the last council meeting) and we'll work it into the 2018 budget.”

Several windstorms this summer contributed to the deterioration of the roof, noted Yargeau. That included shingles being ripped from the roof, causing the leak into the fire hall.

The new metal roof is considered a better replacement option.

“It's more of a long-term solution,” said Yargeau. “The lifespan of a metal roof is far greater than a shingle roof.”

Penhold fire Chief Jim Pendergast said Black Diamond Contracting has been notified about the contract approval for the new roof, which is expected to be installed as soon as possible, depending on the weather.
