Penhold and area residents can enjoy some outdoor winter fun this weekend with Winterfest.

The annual event put on by the Town of Penhold is taking place on Feb. 6 between 1 and 3 p.m. at the Outdoor Ice Shack.

Winterfest will have a number of activities and snacks for children and families and is free for everyone to attend. This year there is a summer picnic theme.

“We're planning to have a summer picnic in the winter,” said Hayley de Beaudrap, community program coordinator with the town. “It's just a chance for families to come out and do some skating on the rink that'll be there and we'll do some other activities, some things that you might see at a summer picnic,” she added.

De Beaudrap said that while activities have not been confirmed, they may include three-legged races, a balance (spoon) race, and a chance for children to play in the snow or make snowmen.

There will also be hot chocolate with marshmallows, hotdogs and an outdoor fire (pit) for people to stay warm.

“It's a free event for the community,” said de Beaudrap. “It gets people out into the community and gives the recreation department a chance to interact with the families, and for families to go and do something in the community together,” she added.

Should Mother Nature not cooperate, said de Beaudrap, there will be something else planned for families that day.

“The event is outdoors but if it's below minus 15 we will have a free skate here at the multiplex,” she said. “That free skate will be a little later in the day from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

“When the weather does cooperate it makes for a pretty nice afternoon,” added de Beaudrap. “Just to be out in the sun, fresh air and being active.”
