PENHOLD – The town is looking into increased lighting around parts of Penhold, after receiving several concerns over dark areas.
“Sometime over the past year Fortis came into town and replaced all of our streetlights with LED lights. It's something Fortis is doing throughout the province,” said Mike Yargeau, Penhold mayor. “We've received some complaints but it was something we also heard during the (election) campaign, that people were concerned that there were some darker areas in town. They didn't feel the streets were lit up as much during the evening as much as they were in the past.”
LED lights are a different type of light, are energy efficient and provide a different style of lighting, said Yargeau, noting they don't reflect as much as the previous lights in town.
Yargeau said the town has been working with FortisAlberta to look into the matter.
“We will direct administration to go around and highlight these areas so we can work with FortisAlberta and give them a list of the areas where we noticed a lack of light,” explained Yargeau.
“One of the things we can look at doing once we have that list is increasing the wattage to the existing streetlights and maybe that will help,” added Yargeau. “Maybe in some areas that won't work, and we'll have to look at adding lights. We don't know yet and that's why we're doing this work now.”
Council is expected to revisit the issue early in 2018.
