PENHOLD – Dozens of Penhold and area families kicked off the Christmas season Friday evening with Penhold's Community Christmas.

The annual event was held at the Penhold Regional Multiplex on Nov. 24.

“This is one of the biggest events we put on in the year,” said Mike Yargeau, Penhold mayor, noting the many family friendly activities. “We have so many families come out to enjoy the evening.

“It's such a great event. I look forward to this every year,” he added.

Penhold's Community Christmas included sleigh rides, cookie decorating, a Christmas market, pictures with Santa, a silent auction to raise funds for the library, face painting, music, hot chocolate, outdoor firepits and a tree lighting ceremony.

“Last year was quite a bit colder,” said Yargeau. “It's a beautiful evening for the sleigh ride. It couldn't have worked out any better for us.”

A number of volunteers helped make the evening a success, he noted. He pointed out some of the local organizations, groups, businesses and individuals who volunteered their time or donated items for the Community Christmas event.

Yargeau has portrayed the role of town crier for the event for the past four years. It is a role he enjoys sharing with Penhold residents.

“I announce some of the events. I just walk around and put a presence on and welcome everyone,” he said. “I was the first town crier we had and the library keeps asking me every year to do it. I love doing it so I keep coming back for it.”

Penhold resident Patricia Parliament was out for her first Community Christmas event with her daughter Saphira.

“I think it's great. It's a way to get the community out together and enjoy time with your family and friends,” said Parliament. “We'll definitely be back next year.”

The Town of Penhold is also hosting a Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 2 at the multiplex, and held an annual charity hockey game between the Bowden Institution and the Penhold Fire Department on Nov. 26. The game is a fundraiser for the Red Deer Christmas Bureau.
