BANFF - A Penhold man is facing several Criminal Code charges in connection to rural crime offences in Banff National Park and Canmore.

“Communication between law enforcement agencies is a key to the Crime Reduction Strategy within the Bow Valley,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Buxton-Carr, commander of the Banff RCMP detachment. “Timely intelligence-sharing allowed our patrol units to recover valuable property and to protect our rural communities against further harm."

Between June 21 and 22, Banff RCMP investigated a series of thefts of gasoline and other property from rural communities, said Buxton-Carr.

He said the offences included the theft of metal gates and ski racks from the national park's Sunshine Ski Village. The investigation produced a description of a suspect vehicle and trailer used in the commission of the offences, said Buxton-Carr.

He said the suspect vehicle and trailer were located in Canmore on June 23 by members of the Canmore RCMP. Further investigation by members of the Banff and Canmore RCMP led to the arrest of an offender and the recovery of stolen property.

Brandon Wegner, 27, of Penhold, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000, theft exceeding $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and
failure to comply with an undertaking

The accused appeared before a justice of the peace on June 23 and was released on a recognizance pending his next appearance in Canmore provincial court on July 25.

Shoplifting Red Deerians busted at local store

A Red Deer man and women are in custody facing numerous Criminal Code charges after allegedly attempting to steal merchandise from a local business.

Innisfail RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuk said on June 22 Mounties responded to a complaint of a suspicious male and female at an Innisfail business.

He said attending police located the female in the business and detained her. She provided a false name and was subsequently arrested, said Matechuk.

He said during a search police located stolen cheques and a controlled substance believed to be methamphetamine.

A 34-year-old female from Red Deer is facing several charges, including mischief under $5,000, obstructing a peace officer, impersonation with intent, possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and failing to comply with probation.

Matechuk said the woman was also wanted on seven outstanding warrants from Red Deer and Ponoka at the time of her arrest.

He said police located the male a short distance away and also arrested him.

A 32-year-old Red Deer male is also facing charges, including failing to comply with probation and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Both were placed in custody awaiting judicial release hearings.

"Civilian cooperation is important to crime reduction efforts and police encourage citizens to report any and all suspicious activity," said Matechuk.
