Penhold residents are well into the new growing season at the local community gardens.

Now in its third year, the Penhold Community Gardens have been a popular choice for local residents who want to grow their own vegetables and flowers.

“The garden is now open. We just got some new soil for people to top up the boxes and whenever they want to start growing they're welcome to start planting at any time,” said Jamie Seiyama, family resource coordinator.

The Penhold Community Gardens consist of 16 raised boxes, located in Hayter Street Park. Participants purchase a garden box, four feet by three feet, for $20, and are able to purchase a maximum of two boxes for $30, noted Seiyama.

“We have 16 boxes in the garden and the last couple of years we've been full – every box was being used,” she said, noting people are assigned a box number to use throughout the growing season. “People can come to the front office at the Town of Penhold and can pay and register here.”

Registrations have been filling up and there are just a few garden boxes remaining, said Seiyama, pointing out the many local residents who enjoy gardening and use the boxes to grow their own vegetables.

“I've heard they grow quite well. Last year quite a few of our growers had success with vegetables and flowers,” she said.

The Penhold Community Gardens began three years ago after a local citizen requested the town create such a space for citizens.

It has been growing since.

“I think the whole idea was to be able to have fresh, organic, local produce, sustainable living and a space to grow their own vegetables,” said Seiyama. “It connects the community as well and it gets neighbours out in a community area.”

With the increase in popularity, there are both new and returning gardeners who will use the community gardens this spring, summer and fall.

“Registration is open and we have boxes left,” said Seiyama.
