Victoria Day is officially celebrated on the Monday closest to May 24.
That is the day that was declared in 1901 by the Canadian government, to honour Queen Victoria following her passing.
It usually falls on the third Monday in May. This year, it is celebrated on May 20.
Canadians continue to honour Queen Victoria because of her important role in the formation of our country. Victoria was Queen at the time that Canada became a country in 1867 and she chose Ottawa as our nation's capital.
Happy Victoria Day!
