Two accidents follow car fire on QEII.
Two cars were seriously damaged and one woman was charged with careless driving following a string of accidents along QEII northbound Jan. 2.
Around 3:45 in the afternoon, a female driver in a 1997 Cadillac DeVille was approaching QEII north from Highway 590 and preparing to merge. Traffic on the main highway had slowed to a standstill following a car fire north of Antler Hill. According to police, the woman merged onto the highway she hit a 2001 Dodge Ram. The Cadillac clipped the axle of the truck, tearing it off. The Cadillac flipped, landing on the roof and deploying the airbags. Innisfail fire and EMS attended the scene as well as sheriffs to help with traffic control. The woman was able to get out of the vehicle and was taken to the Innisfail Health Centre for minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed away from the scene.
Road conditions and visibility were excellent that day, said police. The exact speed of the Cadillac was not determined.
About 25 minutes later, at 4:10 p.m., another two-vehicle collision occurred further south on QEII. It was a minor accident where one vehicle was rear-ended by another. "There was no attention to the slow traffic," explained Cpl. Jeff Hildebrandt of what he said likely caused the two collisions following the car fire. "They (people) go into cruise mode."
