RCMP launching holiday Check Stops
Innisfail RCMP and its traffic control unit will begin its holiday season Check Stop campaign in the town and along the Queen Elizabeth Highway Wednesday night.
The Check Stops will be targeting impaired drivers, said Innisfail Cpl. A.J. Mand.
The campaign will continue into the new year, he said.
In the meantime, Mand is urging travelers to exercise caution throughout the holidays.
“There are lots of families traveling on the highway. Be careful. Slow down. The weather may be a factor,” said Mand. “The roads will have black ice. Leave lots of space between vehicles. Basically, don’t tail gate.”
Highway speeders caught and charged
A pair of highway speeders recently nabbed by police did not get off with just tickets.
Instead, they found themselves charged with offences far more serious.
At about 10:20 p.m. on Dec. 17 an Innisfail RCMP traffic member caught a Calgary man in his 30s speeding on the Queen Elizabeth Highway (QEII) near Hwy. 42.
After pulling the man over, the Mountie at the scene smelled a strong scent of marijuana. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 20 grams of marijuana, said Innisfail Cpl. A.J. Mand.
The man was charged with possession of marijuana.
Two days later, at about 9 p.m. on Dec. 19, the RCMP stopped a Red Deer man speeding on the QEII one kilometer north of Hwy. 42.
The Mountie at the scene asked the man for his driver’s licence but it could not be produced. Further investigation by the RCMP officer revealed the man’s licence was suspended. He was charged with driving without a driver’s licence. His vehicle was seized. It will remain seized for 30 days, said police.
Charge laid in domestic assault
An Innisfail woman has been charged with assault following an altercation with her partner.
Innisfail RCMP Cpl. A.J. Mand said police responded to a call at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 19.
Mounties arrived a local residence and a female in her late 20s was charged, said Mand.
He said alcohol was a factor in the incident.
RCMP probe booted vehicle
Innisfail RCMP is looking into a report of a damaged vehicle in the Raven area.
The vehicle, belonging to a rural resident near Raven, was repeatedly booted by a man wearing steel-tipped boots, said Innisfail Cpl. A.J. Mand.
The file is still under investigation.
