RCMP say they may have put a "dent" in rising property crime in town and throughout the region following the arrest last week of a pair of wanted alleged fugitives.

Innisfail RCMP Sgt. Lori Eiler said at about 9 p.m. on Feb. 1 an Innisfail RCMP member on routine patrol observed a suspicious vehicle and attempted a traffic stop in town.

The vehicle fled from police and was located a short time later, abandoned in the middle of a road near the Highway 2A and 42nd Street intersection with extensive damage, said Eiler.

She said the investigation continued and within a short period of time one male and one female were arrested. Eiler said the two individuals were wanted on numerous warrants and the damaged vehicle was confirmed as stolen.

"Based on the charges that are public record as well as existing warrants they had for their arrest we believe they are active in that type of lifestyle," said Eiler. "Laying charges and proceeding through the courts may put a dent in some of their activities."

Kayla Marie Cecka, 27, of Red Deer, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime not exceeding $5,000, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of counterfeit money, obstruction and two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.

Luke Andrew Jardine, 25, of Red Deer, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime not exceeding $5,000, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of counterfeit money, possession of a substance contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, possession of counterfeit money, five counts of failing to comply with a recognizance, driving a motor vehicle without a licence, failing to obey traffic control device, a driver in an accident failing to remain or return to the scene, driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

Cecka and Jardine have been remanded in custody and were scheduled to make their first court appearance on Feb. 3 at Red Deer provincial court.
