Public asks for clarification on snow removal policy

Fifteen people turned out for coffee with council at the Penhold council chambers last Monday evening.

Most concerns revolved around seasonal issues such as street clearing needs and policies, explained Mayor Dennis Cooper.

“There was a question, do we have a bylaw or policy about cleaning the sidewalks. Some people got bylaw letters and some people got warnings and people want to know what are the parameters of cleaning the sidewalks,” he said. Cooper said there is work to be done to make the rules clearer for residents about when and how often they have to clear the sidewalks.

“Are we making it clear enough for our residents that 72 hours after the snowfall you’re supposed to have the sidewalk cleared. If it’s a skiff of snow, do they have to brush or clean it? Is there a measurement to it; I don’t know. We’re going to ask those questions and go from there.”

He also said there were about four people from Boutteiller Close with concerns about the entrance onto Highway 2A, explaining the snow buildup has created a small hill. “They’re taking a run and then they’re in the middle of the highway and that doesn’t seem like a wise thing to do,” he said of four residents’ concerns. He said council will look into getting the snow removed from that area sooner, and sanding it as well.

“It was interesting how seasons shifted the dynamic of the meeting,” said Cooper, noting last coffee meeting most discussion generated around water and drainage, something he said is a priority for council in the coming year.

Other concerns included wanting to know more about the money being spent on the multiplex and what impact that has on each resident. Cooper said council will be examining in more detail the multiplex in the coming budget deliberations now that they have an entire year of operations to review.

An interest in getting more patrol on the 40 km/h speed on Robinson Avenue was also brought up.
