Participants of the third annual Relay for Life stormed through the pouring rain that hit Innisfail just after 4 a.m. June 9.
“Nothing stops us,” said Trish King, revenue development coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society. “Cancer doesn't sleep and we don't either.”
In total, 14 teams — 114 participants and 23 survivors — signed up for the 12-hour overnight walkathon that raises money and awareness for all forms of cancer. In total, $45,703 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The event kicked off with the survivor walk at 7 p.m. and from there participants took turns walking the field at École Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School.
“I think it's important to bring awareness and to do your part for the community,” said Amy Severtson close to midnight on June 8. This was her first time participating in the relay.
“I really liked it last year,” said friend Megan Adams, who decided she had to do again for a second year.
Besides walking, other events were set up throughout the night for participants who weren't currently scheduled to walk, including a high heel race for the men that started just after 2 a.m. when wheelbarrow races got underway as well.
Music and entertainment were also set up with food and drinks inside the gym for people looking to get warm.
“It was very well done; the committee did a fantastic job,” said King.
Next year's event is planned for June 7. Anyone who signs up before Jan. 31 will only pay a $10 registration fee said King. Visit relayforlife.ca for more information.
