INNISFAIL - Local Mounties, grateful for public assistance, have nabbed another suspect allegedly involved in a stolen vehicle case.

"Cooperation between the RCMP and the public is instrumental to the success of our crime reduction efforts," said Innisfail RCMP Sgt. Lori Eiler. "The simple act of reporting any suspicious activity or crime provides us with the necessary information by which we gather intelligence.  RCMP would like to thank the public for alerting them to this activity."

Eiler said at about  8:30 p.m. on May 1 police, while on regular rural patrol, observed a suspicious vehicle parked in the trees along Rge. Rd. 20, south of Highway 54.  She said RCMP approached the vehicle and a male standing beside the vehicle turned and ran. Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen and contained the area.

Eiler said Mounties, with the assistance of RCMP Police Dog Services, located the male lying on the ground.  She said the male was arrested and sustained minor injuries during the police takedown. The male was identified as 37-year-old Innisfail resident Mathew Newberry, said Eiler.

Newberry has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, three counts of possession of property under $5,000 and possession of identity documents.

He was released by a justice of the peace on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court on May 30.
