INNISFAIL - A Medicine Hat man is facing charges of stealing a vehicle from a local dealership and burglarizing a rural residence.

On the morning of April 25, Innisfail RCMP responded to a complaint of a man breaking glass and banging on a door of a rural residence east of town in Red Deer County.

Innisfail RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuk said multiple police units attended the area and set up containment with the assistance of Red Deer County patrol members, the Red Deer RCMP Police Dog Service and the Red Deer City RCMP Traffic Unit.

After police arrived a stolen Jeep Cherokee was located that had been involved in a collision with a power pole, said Matechuk.

He said while RCMP were waiting for the police dog to arrive Innisfail police officers observed a vehicle leaving a neighbouring farmyard that became stuck in a ditch while trying to avoid a washout left over from the recent flooding.

Matechuk said three Innisfail RCMP police officers approached the vehicle and arrested the lone male suspect.

He said subsequent investigation revealed the suspect allegedly stole a Jeep and committed an attempted theft of another vehicle from an Innisfail car dealership earlier that morning.

Tyler Wells, 32, of Medicine Hat, was remanded in custody facing six Criminal Code charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, break and entering, two counts of mischief, possession of property obtained by crime and one count of possession of break-in tools.

Wells is scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court on May 2 to answer to the charges.
