RED DEER COUNTY – Innisfail RCMP are praising the “heroic” actions of witnesses to a near-drowning situation at Gleniffer Lake who saved the lives of two youths.
RCMP Cpl. Susan Richter, of the Alberta RCMP Media Relations Group, said emergency services were dispatched at 2:15 p.m. on July 31 to Gleniffer Lake to respond to a report of a near drowning.
Richter said the investigation determined two youths were swimming in the lake when witnesses saw them appearing to be struggling and going under the water.
Witnesses jumped in and pulled the youths to safety, said Richter. She said the youths were transported to hospitals in Calgary and Innisfail where they were treated and later released.
“Thankfully, in this case when the swimmers started to struggle, witnesses were able to intervene and they came to the young swimmers’ aid quickly. Their actions prevented an unnecessary tragedy,” said Innisfail Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuk.
“While people are enjoying the hot weather and the outdoor activities our beautiful community provides, it is critical to understand the risk factors involved in some summer activities,” added Matechuk. “A lake may look calm, but conditions like water temperature, wind, and current can change rapidly.”
Matechuk wants to ensure the heroic actions of the witnesses are recognized by the RCMP and will be recommending them for a St. John Ambulance Life Saving Award, said Richter.
