RCMP continue to advise the public of poor road conditions this morning along Highway 2 through central Alberta.

Highways in Alberta are covered or partly covered with snow, there’s icy sections and in some areas it is snowing with fair to poor visibility in sections, according to Alberta 511.

“Many snow plows and other snow removal equipment, such as graders, continue to work to keep Alberta’s highways clear and open to traffic. It is advised to stay off the road during these poor road conditions, unless travel is absolutely necessary,” an RCMP statement issued around 10 a.m. Sunday said.

If roads are closed, RCMP say do not travel at all and pointed travellers to Alberta 511 for up-to-date road reports.

The RCMP’s first travel advisory for the area was issued at 12:05 a.m. on Dec. 17.

Black ice and changing conditions were affecting visibility and surface traction on Highway 2 between Red Deer and Airdrie.

At about 9:54 a.m. on Saturday, Alberta 511 advised of a motor vehicle collision blocking the lefthand lane of Highway 2 northbound south of Innisfail. At about noon, an Alberta 511 updated said the collision had been cleared.

Later that day, at about 2:56 p.m., another advisory was issued that there were reports of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 2 southbound approaching the Highway 581 junction east of Carstairs. Traffic was delayed before the collision was eventually cleared, an Alberta 511 advisory issued around 4:30 p.m. stated.
