INNISFAIL - Locals can achieve lofty goals with a new town-sponsored climbing program.

Last week the first of three climbing events was held, and targetted youth participants. The next one will be Feb. 13, and will be for aspiring climbers aged 18 or over. March 13 will be a family night aimed at those old and young.

"We’re going to be ramping up to a full on climbing program,” said Kane Williams, recreation coordinator for the Town of Innisfail.

These nights, hosted at Innisfail Middle School and using the climbing wall in the gym, start with the climbing technique of bouldering. That means the heights reached aren’t too towering and the climbers can skip some of the equipment.

"You don’t need a harness, you don’t need a rope,” Williams said of bouldering. "It only goes to a certain height.”

It also means the participants don’t need to belayed, which they would need someone trained to do so for taller heights.

Williams said if it appears there’s a large enough interest in climbing, the program could be scaled up to include heights that require harnesses and belaying.

"I really want to get a good sense of how much of an appetite there is,” Williams said.

"You have to grow it in the right way,” he said of adding to the program in the future.

The response and participation numbers will help determine if there are future events. Williams said 13 climbers came out for last week’s youth night and had a great time.

A climbing program has been a frequently requested item since Williams started in his role as recreation coordinator.

"It’s because it’s so exciting,” Williams said. "I’ve had people ask me about it quite a bit.”

The Feb. 13 adult night will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The March 13 family night runs 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is open to all ages, though those under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardians, and climbers under 13 must have a parent or guardian accompany them.

Both sessions will be held at Innisfail Middle School. The cost is $3 per participant.

Williams said attendees should make sure to wear clothes they can move in and non-marking athletic footwear, and to bring water.

There are change rooms on premise for those who want to swap outfits there.
