INNISFAIL – If you want to ensure a happy, attentive crowd will come to your party bring the food.

And that is what the Innisfail RCMP did on May 24 for their annual lunch hour community barbecue in the parking lot of the Innisfail Co-op grocery store.

Citizens were invited for free hamburgers, hotdogs and cold drinks, and to meet and talk to local police officers. The event was held In recognition of Crime Prevention Week. It was an opportunity for Innisfail RCMP to find out what was on the minds of Innisfailians when it comes to public safety.

"What are people feeling? What are they liking or disliking? What do they want to see more of? What is really bothering them?''' said Innisfail RCMP Sgt. Lori Eiler, adding she was hearing "lots of positivity" from attending citizens. "I think by and large this detachment does some really wonderful work on a community level. I think we do great policing initiatives but if there are ways to improve the service we are delivering I would like to hear it.

"We are certainly open to any kind of constructive criticism as well," said Eiler, emphasizing the importance of public engagement with the community cannot be overstated. "It is our opportunity to reach out to people in the community, engage with them and hear their concerns and ideas and suggestions in regards to police services in Innisfail. We are always welcoming input from our community."

Along with local RCMP officers at the community event there was also Safety Bear, Innisfail and Penhold community peace officers, victim's services advocates, Innisfail Restorative Justice volunteers and members of the Innisfail Fire Department.

"We invited all of our community partners. These are people that work with us, and this is just an appreciation for all of their hard work as well," said Eiler.

In the meantime, Innisfail RCMP are inviting citizens to come down to the detachment office at 4904 – 45th Ave. to pick up a 2019-20 community engagement form. The intent of the form is to get more details on safety and policing issues that are of concern to the citizens of the community.

All comments received from Innisfailians will continue to form part of an ongoing discussion with Innisfail RCMP around community policing and safety priorities.

To find out more about upcoming engagement opportunities with the RCMP contact the local detachment office at 403-227-3341.
